What Happens During a Consultation?

The exact consultation depends on your individual situation.

We Discuss the Problem

You explain what you experience, when it occurs and how it affects your playing.

You do not need to know what is causing the problem. That is part of what we examine.

We Observe Your Playing

Where appropriate, I observe you playing so that we can examine what actually happens physically while you play.

We Examine the Physical Relationship Between You and the Instrument

We consider the violin hold, posture, movement, muscular tension and the physical relationship between you and the instrument.

A problem experienced in one area may be influenced by what is happening elsewhere.

We Explore and Test Practical Possibilities

We examine practical changes that may be relevant to your particular problem and consider what happens when those changes are introduced in actual playing.

The aim is not to apply a predetermined method, but to determine what may be appropriate for you.

Who Is This For?

The service is available to:

  • Beginners
  • Amateur violinists
  • Advanced players
  • Professional violinists
  • Soloists

You do not need to be an advanced or professional player.

The important consideration is that you are experiencing a physical problem when playing and want specialist help in understanding it.

100% Confidential

Every consultation is private and 100% confidential.

This is particularly important for professional violinists and soloists who may need to discuss physical difficulties without concern about their professional reputation or opportunities.

Before Your Consultation

It can be useful to think about:

  • What physical problem are you experiencing?
  • When does it occur?
  • What effect does it have on your playing?
  • Does it change during longer playing or demanding repertoire?
  • Does it occur during performances as well as practice?
  • What have you already tried?

You do not need to diagnose the cause yourself.
